About Academic Year in America (AYA) AYA is a renowned high school homestay program in the United States, celebrated for its commitment to fostering intercultural understanding and exchange. With a rich history dating back to 1981, AYA has established itself as a gold standard in cultural exchange, working closely with high schools across the U.S. and supported by thousands of American host families. As a part of the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1967, AYA is deeply rooted in a mission to promote worldwide understanding through cultural exchange. Key Responsibilities As an International Education Coordinator, you will play a crucial role in promoting the AYA program, recruiting host families, and supporting exchange students and their host families throughout their journey. Your responsibilities will include: Networking and promoting the AYA program through community outreach efforts to identify and recruit suitable host families. Collaborating with local schools to coordinate exchange student enrollment and ensure a smooth integration process. Screening and selecting host families that meet the program's requirements, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for the students. Maintaining regular contact with both the students and their host families to ensure student safety, address any concerns, and fulfill reporting requirements. Providing logistical, emotional, and social support to students, host families, and schools, fostering a positive and enriching experience for all parties involved. Implementing conflict resolution and mediation strategies as necessary to address any issues that may arise. Providing emergency housing in your home if needed or identifying suitable local emergency housing options. Essential Qualifications and Skills To excel in this role, you should possess: A strong ability to take initiative, think creatively, and seek out the information needed to address challenges. An affinity for working with people and a talent for building connections within your community. A background in marketing, education, social work, or international relations, which can be beneficial in understanding the nuances of cultural exchange. A working knowledge of social media and the ability to utilize online databases, tools, and forms effectively. A valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle, as local travel may be required. The ability to devote 10-15 hours per week, with flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed. A minimum age of 25 years. Preferred Qualifications While not mandatory, previous experience in cultural exchange, education, or a related field can be a significant plus. Additionally, having a network within your community can help in promoting the AYA program and recruiting host families.
