Job Summary: We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced General Liability Underwriter to join our dynamic underwriting team. In this role, you will be responsible for evaluating, assessing, and underwriting general liability insurance policies for commercial clients. Your expertise in risk analysis, pricing, and policy structuring will ensure that our company maintains profitability while managing risk effectively. You will also play a key role in building strong relationships with brokers and ensuring the proper application of underwriting guidelines and regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities: Underwrite and evaluate general liability insurance applications for a wide range of industries and businesses, ensuring risk is appropriately assessed and policies are priced correctly. Analyze and assess risk factors, such as company operations, industry type, claims history, safety protocols, and financial stability, to determine coverage, terms, and premium rates. Collaborate with brokers to gather detailed information for underwriting purposes, ensuring all relevant data is collected to make informed decisions. Apply underwriting guidelines and company policies while adhering to regulatory standards, making adjustments to policies as needed. Assess the adequacy of current policies and recommend modifications for renewals based on claims experience, risk exposure, and market conditions. Review complex insurance applications and provide clear communication to brokers about underwriting decisions, coverage options, exclusions, and pricing. Monitor industry trends, emerging risks, and competitor products to assist in pricing and underwriting strategies. Work closely with risk management teams to identify risk mitigation strategies and ensure the proper coverage is in place for clients. Maintain accurate underwriting records, decisions, and documentation for both new business and renewals. Provide mentorship and guidance to junior underwriters and assist in the development of team underwriting practices. Support claims departments with any relevant underwriting information and assist with the resolution of any claims issues related to general liability. Assist in handling some of the renewal book up to $10,000,000 annually Targeted new business production goal of $5,000,000 annually Qualifications: 3-5 years of experience in general liability underwriting or related insurance field. Strong understanding of general liability insurance products, underwriting guidelines, and industry regulations. Excellent risk assessment, analytical, and decision-making skills. Proficient in underwriting software and tools, as well as Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Solid written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with clients, brokers, and internal teams effectively. Strong negotiation skills and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Strong attention to detail, with an emphasis on accuracy and compliance. Preferred Skills: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, or related field (or equivalent work experience) is a plus. Industry certifications such as CPCU, AINS, or ARM are a plus. Experience with niche general liability policies or specialized industries (e.g., construction, manufacturing, Real Estate). Pre-existing relationships with wholesale insurance brokers Knowledge of risk management strategies and loss control measures. Familiarity with claims handling processes and insurance policy language. Working Conditions: Full-time position, available in-office or hybrid (depending on location). Occasional travel may be required for client meetings or industry events. Compensation: Competitive salary based on experience, along with a performance-based bonus structure.
