Experienced Education Specialist for After-School Programs – Providing Academic Support and Enrichment to Students in Grades K-8

As an Education Specialist, you will play a vital role in helping us achieve our mission by providing intensive academic support and enrichment to students in grades K-8. Job Overview We are seeking an experienced and passionate Education Specialist to join our team at the Vanderbilt YMCA. As an Education Specialist, you will be responsible for providing academic tutoring in math and literacy to students in grades K-8, designing instruction and activities that promote subject mastery, develop grade-level competencies, and teach study skills. You will also create a safe and positive environment that encourages learning, interaction, and academic and personal growth. Our After-School programs operate Monday through Friday and during public school breaks, and we are looking for someone who is committed to making a difference in the lives of our students. Key Responsibilities Provide intensive academic tutoring in math and literacy to students in grades K-8, tailoring instruction to meet the unique needs of each student Design and implement engaging lesson plans that promote subject mastery, develop grade-level competencies, and teach study skills Create a safe and positive environment that encourages learning, interaction, and academic and personal growth Document, track, and maintain regular progress and academic records of designated participants Provide feedback regarding participant progress as needed, and work with students to develop strategies for improvement Assist participants in actively achieving an increased comprehension and retention of specific subject material, and improved academic skill in designated areas Help participants develop necessary study skills for academic success, including time management, organization, and self-advocacy Identify participants experiencing difficulty and provide encouragement and alternative explanations of subject material Assist participants with homework as needed, and provide additional support to students who require it Work with Site Director and school staff to understand academic expectations of day school, and develop activities, assignments, practice tests, and strategies accordingly Assist participants in developing self-confidence and reducing anxiety or fear of failure in academic work Work with participants to develop a high level of motivation in academic areas and positive attitudes toward learning and studying Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all participants Create and maintain a strength-based, youth-focused atmosphere that is consistent and sensitive to the needs of participants with learning, emotional, or behavioral differences Maintain accurate program documentation, including attendance, sign-in/out forms, behavior/incident/accident reports, as appropriate Serve as a positive role model for participants, demonstrating a commitment to academic excellence, personal growth, and community engagement Essential Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field, with a strong foundation in math and literacy instruction Teaching credentials preferred, with experience working with students in grades K-8 Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth in an academic environment, with a proven track record of success Public School teaching experience preferred, with knowledge of public school functions, Common Core, and specific knowledge in age-appropriate math and/or literacy curriculum General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to learn new technologies and software Knowledge of Access, Adobe PageMaker, and Photoshop preferred, with experience using technology to enhance instruction and engagement General knowledge of Google Classroom, Google Meets, Zoom, and other online learning platforms, with the ability to adapt to new technologies and tools Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues Must be able to work Monday through Friday afternoons/evenings, with flexibility to work during public school breaks and summer months Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Education or a related field, with a specialization in math, literacy, or a related area Experience working with students with diverse learning needs, including English language learners, students with disabilities, and students from diverse cultural backgrounds Knowledge of project-based learning, differentiated instruction, and other innovative teaching methods Experience with data-driven instruction, with the ability to use data to inform teaching practices and drive student growth Bi-lingual or multi-lingual skills, with the ability to communicate with students and families in their native language Skills and Competencies Strong knowledge of math and literacy curriculum, with the ability to design and implement engaging lesson plans Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and colleagues Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits At the YMCA of Greater New York, we are committed to helping our staff grow and develop in their careers.
