Backend Developer - Firebase
Back-End Developer – Firebase & Cloud Infrastructure Location: Remote (US required) Employment Type: Part-Time / Contract (with growth potential) Reports To: Founder About Us Athlete Rating System (ARS) is a performance-focused sports analytics platform built to help athletes, coaches, and evaluators measure development in a structured and objective way. ARS is live today and evolving toward monetized features. Role Overview ARS is seeking a Back-End Developer with strong Firebase expertise to own and evolve the server-side infrastructure powering the ARS platform. This role focuses on designing, building, and maintaining scalable, secure backend systems that support real-time data, authentication, cloud functions, and storage across multiple platforms. You will work directly with the ARS founder and the front-end developer to shape core backend architecture, data models, and application logic. This position is ideal for someone who already has a primary role but can commit focused development time each week and take meaningful ownership of backend decisions. Success in this role requires a founder’s mindset—comfort with ambiguity, pragmatic problem-solving, and accountability for long-term technical direction rather than task-based execution alone. This position offers a path toward becoming a technical co-founder. As the platform grows and monetization milestones are reached, the developer in this role may earn an equity interest based on measurable contribution and long-term commitment. Equity consideration is milestone-driven and structured to align incentives while protecting the company’s long-term flexibility. Duties • Develop and optimize backend services using Firebase tools including Firestore, Realtime Database, Cloud Functions, Authentication, and Storage. • Collaborate with front-end developers to integrate UI components with server-side logic using React, Angular, or other frameworks. • Design and implement RESTful APIs and web services to facilitate smooth data exchange between client applications and backend systems. • Ensure application security by implementing authentication protocols, data validation, and access controls within Firebase. • Write clean, efficient code adhering to best practices in software development and SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle). • Conduct unit testing and debugging to identify issues early and ensure high-quality deliverables. • Participate in Agile development processes, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and code reviews to foster continuous improvement. Qualifications • 3+ years of backend development experience. • 2+ years of hands-on Firebase experience. • Proven experience in web development with a strong focus on backend systems using Firebase platform components. • Proficiency in JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, and related frameworks such as React Express or Angular. • Solid understanding of database design principles with experience in Firebase Firestore, MySQL, PostgreSQL or MongoDB. • Knowledge of RESTful APIs, SOAP web services, JSON/XML data formats, and microservices architecture. • Familiarity with version control systems like GitHub for automated deployment processes. • Experience working within an Agile environment and utilizing tools for project management. • Strong debugging skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues efficiently across various platforms. • Understanding of application security best practices including OAuth2, JWT tokens, and data encryption techniques. Join us if you’re eager to develop innovative backend solutions that power impactful applications! We value technical excellence combined with a passion for creating scalable systems that enhance user engagement worldwide. This paid position offers an exciting chance to grow your skills within a collaborative team dedicated to technological innovation and excellence. What We Offer • Dynamic, experimental, and creative work environment. • Flexible remote work schedule. • Meaningful ownership in backend architecture and decision-making. • Opportunity to earn an equity stake tied to execution milestones and product growth. • Hands-on involvement in a live, growing product.
