About the position The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor will oversee patient care activities and department staff within the Adult Respiratory Care Department at the University of Michigan. This role is crucial for ensuring patient safety and quality improvement while supporting the department's mission and goals. The supervisor will lead and engage staff in delivering respiratory care services, requiring a strong background in respiratory therapy and leadership skills. Responsibilities • Supervise patient care activities and department staff. • Provide educational functions for the department. • Ensure staff competency and evaluate performance of technicians and therapists. • Initiate performance improvement processes and manage disciplinary actions if necessary. • Schedule and assign work for technical staff to ensure patient care services are delivered as ordered. • Evaluate, upgrade, and develop new policies and procedures. • Instruct and inservice personnel on new technical devices and clinical policies/procedures. • Consult on respiratory care procedures for medical and nursing staff. • Hold regular meetings with respiratory care personnel. • Report and investigate patient safety events, creating recommendations for corrective actions. • Check patient charts and observe therapy to ensure quality of respiratory care procedures. • Assist department leadership with special projects and assignments. • Coordinate in-service education for staff, physicians, and nursing staff on patient care modalities or equipment usage. • Support research projects and participate in studies, presenting findings at conferences. Requirements • Baccalaureate degree in science, education, respiratory care, or a related field. • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). • At least 2 years of experience in critical care as a respiratory therapist. • Active license as a Respiratory Therapist by Michigan Department of Community Health. • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare practitioners. • Knowledge of basic and advanced respiratory care techniques related to cardio-pulmonary disease management. • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. • Demonstrated managerial qualities including organizational skills and problem-solving abilities. Nice-to-haves • Experience in leadership capacities or supervisory activities. • Strategic thinking and effective communication of ideas and principles. • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and other software tools. • Understanding of research methodology and statistical relationships. • Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
