Lead Patent Attorney: Product Architecture & AI

Remote Full-time
The Role We are looking for a forward-thinking Patent Attorney who is ready to stop billing hours and start building the future of our profession. You won't just be advising us on the law; you will be the "legal architect" behind our AI. You will act as the bridge between the complex world of patent prosecution and our engineering team, ensuring our AI thinks like a seasoned attorney. This role is ideal for a mid-senior practitioner (4–8 years exp.) who is obsessed with efficiency, loves technology, and wants to shape the tool that their peers will use for the next decade. What you’ll do Product Architecture & "Translation" • Be the "First User": deeply test and "break" our features. You will draft applications and responses using IP Author daily to identify gaps in logic, tone, and accuracy. • The Engineering Bridge: Translate complex legal concepts (e.g., 103 obviousness logic, antecedent basis, support in the description) into clear, "if/then" requirements that our engineers can code. • Prompt Strategy: Work directly with our technical team to refine the "legal voice" of the AI, ensuring the output sounds like a skilled human drafter, not a machine. • Develop case studies: Architect various ways of using tools with real life examples and use cases Market Engagement & Evangelism • Peer-to-Peer Demos: Lead high-level demos for prospective clients. You aren't "selling"; you are showing fellow attorneys how to modernize their workflow using a tool you helped build. • Content & Community: Help create practical content showing how to use AI in daily practice. Provide the raw insights and "war stories" to our marketing team, ensuring our messaging resonates with real patent attorneys. • Feedback Loop: Gather candid feedback from customers and beta users and translate their "attorney complaints" into actionable product tickets. Internal Strategy • Roadmap Definition: Help us prioritize which workflows to automate next based on "pain vs. value" analysis. • Regulatory Watch: Keep the team updated on how AI is being regulated by the USPTO and EPO, etc., ensuring our product remains compliant and defensible. What you’ve done • 4–8 years of actual practice: You are a qualified Patent Attorney who has spent the last few years actually drafting applications and responding to Office Actions. You know the pain of a 103 rejection or a claim objection intimately. • AI Experimentation: You are an "AI Power User." You haven't just read about AI; you use ChatGPT, Claude, or other tools to help with your daily work. You understand what prompts work and where the models currently fail. • Tech-Savviness: You are comfortable learning new software. You might not code, but you understand logic, workflows, and perhaps have dabbled in automation (e.g., Python scripts, Excel macros, or complex docketing setups). • Communication: You can explain a "Means-Plus-Function" claim to a software engineer who does not read patents, and make them understand what it is and why it matters. Who you are • A "Hacker" Mindset: You are the person at your firm who is always looking for a faster/better way to do things. You hate repetitive, low-value tasks. • Ambitious & Hands-on: You don't need a team of associates to be effective. You are happy to roll up your sleeves, write a prompt, test a feature, or draft a white paper yourself. • Forward-Thinking: You believe the billable hour model is evolving, and you want to be on the side of the innovators, not the traditionalists. • Empathetic but Critical: You can advocate for the user (the attorney) while pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible. What we offer • Industry leading compensation, including meaningful equity. • A central role in defining the product and company strategy. • Opportunity to shape the next generation of tools for patent professionals globally. • A mission-driven team that respects both deep domain expertise and product innovation.
