Hybrid Illustrator (Painterly + Digital) for Whimsical Children's Storybook
PROJECT UPDATE – PLEASE READ This is a work-for-hire project where the story, character designs, and final artwork will be owned exclusively by the author upon payment. I already have finalized character models, a locked visual direction, and a complete storyboard. I’m looking for an illustrator to bring an existing world to life not to create from scratch. All illustrations, character designs, and final artwork will be owned exclusively by the author upon payment. Hi! I’m an author working on a whimsical, magical children’s book centered around a lovable dog named Winston and three children. The story includes detailed nature scenes, expressive characters, and lots of tiny hidden “easter egg” critters throughout each page that kids will love discovering. Style note: The visual direction is painterly, warm, whimsical, and cinematic closer to storybook concept art than flat illustration. Think soft glowing light, textured brushwork, expressive characters, rich environments, and magical details woven naturally into nature scenes. I’m looking for an illustrator who can: • Create consistent characters across many scenes • Must also be able to give the illustrations a painterly hand painted feel • Illustrate lush, detailed environments (trees, nature, magical touches) • Add small, playful background details (tiny animals, creatures, hidden surprises) • Work collaboratively and take gentle creative direction This is an ongoing project with approximately 50+ illustrations total. I already have reference images and a clear visual direction to guide consistency. This project is not a fit for flat or vector illustration styles, or for artists looking to experiment with multiple unrelated styles. I’m looking for someone comfortable using AI-assisted tools as part of a painterly, artist-led workflow (for example: refinement, iteration, or consistency support), while still applying strong artistic judgment, hand-painted sensibility, and human storytelling. This is not a one-click or prompt-only project.Style: Whimsical, playful, storybook magic (not overly realistic) Visually, the world should feel alive and enchanted from the house and trees to the smallest background details. Trees may have whimsical, expressive shapes and detailed trunks, environments should feel warm and breathing with life, and tiny hidden characters (a mouse sidekick, raccoon, playful critters, imaginative “easter eggs”) appear throughout the book for children to discover again and again. This is a full children’s book project, not standalone illustrations. Maintaining strong character consistency across approximately 50+ scenes is essential. I am specifically looking for an illustrator who: • Is comfortable creating character model sheets before final illustrations • Can keep faces, proportions, clothing, and expressions consistent across all pages • Works in a thoughtful, collaborative process: sketch → feedback → color → final • Can use AI tools only as support for consistency (not as one-click final artwork) I already have reference images, a clear visual direction, and a full storyboard. The goal is to bring this world to life in a way that feels cohesive, warm, magical, and intentional from the first page to the last. If you enjoy long-form storytelling, collaboration, and building a visual world with care, I’d love to hear from you. Apply tot his job
