Role Description A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is responsible for assessing, monitoring, and treating patients with various respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD, pneumonia, bronchitis, and emphysema. The RT works closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized treatment plans, conduct diagnostic tests, and provide appropriate respiratory therapies. • Spirometry Testing Key Responsibilities • Conduct Pulmonary Function Screenings: Use spirometry equipment to perform comprehensive pulmonary function tests (PFTs) on patients to assess lung function and diagnose respiratory conditions. • Patient Education: Provide clear instructions to patients regarding the preparation for and execution of pulmonary function tests. Educate patients on the proper use of respiratory equipment, including inhalers and nebulizers, and the administration of medications such as albuterol. • Administer Respiratory Treatments: Deliver albuterol for post pulmonary function examination. • Diagnostic Testing: Conduct pre- and post-pulmonary function testing, including measuring lung capacity, spirometry, and other diagnostic evaluations. • Patient Monitoring and Follow-Up: Regularly assess patient progress during treatment and adjust therapies as necessary. Monitor equipment functionality and patient comfort during treatments. • Collaboration with Healthcare Teams: Communicate effectively with Pulmonologist and team members when necessary. • Patient Safety and Care: Ensure a safe and clean environment for patients during procedures. Follow all safety protocols and maintain high standards of care in all aspects of respiratory therapy. Qualifications • Licensure: Current state licensure as a Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). • Certification: Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and/or Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) preferred. • Also accepted: AARC Office Spirometry Certificate Experience • Experience in performing spirometry testing. Skills and Abilities • Strong communication and patient care skills. • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare team. • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills. • Knowledge of respiratory equipment and medications.
