About the position The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) provides specialized support to the genetic counselors in the Departments of Clinical Genomics, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, and the Center for Individualized Medicine. Under the supervision of the Genetic Counselor Supervisor, individuals within the clinical setting assist with clinical case preparation, attain family histories, help facilitate genetic testing and track clinical test results. In the laboratory setting, they assist with test utilization management, provide client support, perform case management, assist with genetic test resulting and reporting, and contribute to test implementation and maintenance. In the research setting, they assist with research activities associated with formal research protocols, research studies, and return of research results to patients. This is a hybrid role, supporting a combination of offsite (remote) and on-site work according to business needs. On-site expectations are determined by the supervisor and will be discussed during the interview. Responsibilities • Assist with clinical case preparation and attain family histories. • Help facilitate genetic testing and track clinical test results. • Assist with test utilization management and provide client support. • Perform case management and assist with genetic test resulting and reporting. • Contribute to test implementation and maintenance. • Assist with research activities associated with formal research protocols and studies. Requirements • Bachelor's degree preferably in biology, psychology, chemistry, medical technology or other health sciences or social science related field. • Working knowledge of human genetics concepts and vocabulary. • Effective communication and organizational skills. • Ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously with efficiency. • Maintain confidentiality of information. • Proficiency in the use of computers, Microsoft Windows based systems, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel. • Demonstrated team-orientation and ability to work with a variety of clinical, research and laboratory personnel. • Adaptability/flexibility in a changing work environment. • Knowledge of quality control procedures and laboratory safety regulations.
