Fractional Controller - Build Financial Foundation for Growing SaaS Company

Overview Field-service companies (FSCOs) deploy mobile workforces to deliver services at commercial- and residential-customer locations. Nine million FSCOs in nearly 100 verticals deliver diverse services ranging from claims adjustment, home-healthcare, and landscaping to pest control, plumbing, property management, and roofing services. In the field, FSCO service technicians do challenging work to fulfill customer orders while capturing actionable data and interacting with digital devices. Their ability to compete and deliver in such an environment demands modern, automated, software, and 40GRID has developed its web and mobile applications, called Firefly, to precisely meet that demand. Open Position 40GRID is a 7-year-old, Massachusetts, SaaS company that has developed Firefly to help FSCOs automate and substantially improve nearly every facety of their operations. Now, we seek an experienced, talented, and motivated controller interested in working part-time now and full-time in the latter half of 2026 (after creating 40GRID's historical and current financial statements and establishing its cyclical bookkeeping processes). Position Specs This part-time role (15-20 hours/week) offers exceptional hands-on experience building financial systems from the ground up. Perfect for an early-career CPA who wants to make a meaningful impact while maintaining flexibility. Initial responsibilities will include: Financial Reporting & Analysis • Reconstruct and maintain historical financial statements (7 years of data) • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports • Develop SaaS-specific metrics reporting (MRR, ARR, churn, CAC, LTV) • Support annual tax preparation and coordinate with tax preparers • Support labor & reporting compliance in states where 40GRID employes people Bookkeeping & Systems Development • Design and implement scalable bookkeeping framework • Maintain accurate books in [QuickBooks/Xero/other system of your choice] • Establish and document accounting policies and procedures • Manage accounts receivable, accounts payable, and monthly reconciliations Strategic Financial Support • Partner directly with founder/CEO on financial planning • Assist with cash flow management and forecasting • Support fundraising efforts with financial documentation • Help evaluate pricing strategies and unit economics Experience & Other Requirements • Active CPA license (or passed exam, pursuing license) • 2+ years of relevant experience • Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills • Experience with cloud accounting software • Understanding of accrual accounting and GAAP Ideal Candidate Will Have: • Interest in or knowledge of SaaS business models • Experience with startups or small businesses • Comfort working independently with minimal supervision • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills • Enthusiasm for building processes from scratch • An ability to drive to occasional in-person meetings in Boston or on Cape Cod Offer • Flexible schedule: 15-20 hours per week, remote-friendly • Competitive hourly rate: $40-$65/hour based on experience • Direct impact: Work directly with leadership, see immediate results • Growth potential: Opportunity to grow into full-time Controller role as company scales • Learning opportunity: Gain comprehensive experience across all aspects of startup finance • Autonomy: Own the entire finance function with support when needed How to Apply Please send your resume and a brief note explaining why this role interests you to [email protected], and Include: • Your CPA exam/certification status • Your availability (hours per week) • A brief example of a financial process or system you've helped implement or improved We're looking to fill this position by February and will review applications on a rolling basis.
