Fractional CFO/Senior Accountant – Nonprofit Finance Workflows & Improvement (Financial Edge)

Overview We’re supporting a nonprofit client in strengthening its day-to-day finance operations and are seeking an experienced fractional CFO or senior nonprofit accountant to assess, streamline, and document core finance workflows. This role focuses on process design, internal controls, and clarity - not transaction processing. The right person will understand how finance systems, people, and policies work together, and will be comfortable operating as an advisor to leadership and staff. Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge Web is required. Scope of Work You will assess existing workflows and help design clearer, more efficient, and better-documented processes that reduce friction for staff and improve data quality and audit readiness. Key areas of focus include: Grant Tracking & Reporting • Review current workflows for grant tracking, reporting, and compliance • Identify gaps, inefficiencies, or risk points • Recommend clearer processes and system-based solutions where possible Administrative Cost Allocation • Review current cost allocation methodologies • Assess documentation and consistency • Recommend improvements aligned with nonprofit and audit best practices Expense & Credit Card Processes • Review credit card usage and expense reporting workflows • Identify opportunities to improve controls, documentation, and timeliness • Reduce manual follow-up and confusion for staff Systems vs. Spreadsheets • Identify where manual spreadsheets are being used unnecessarily • Recommend system-based alternatives (Financial Edge Web or connected tools) • Support a shift toward sustainable, repeatable workflows Roles, Handoffs & Controls • Clarify roles and responsibilities within the finance function • Map handoffs between staff, leadership, and external partners • Strengthen internal controls without adding unnecessary bureaucracy Documentation & Enablement • Document improved processes clearly to support: • Continuity • Onboarding • Cross-training • Create materials that non-finance staff can actually understand and use What We’re Looking For • 7+ years of nonprofit finance experience • Prior work as a fractional CFO, controller, or senior accountant • Strong familiarity with Financial Edge Web • Experience with grants, restricted funds, and nonprofit compliance • Systems-minded and process-oriented • Comfortable advising leadership and working cross-functionally • Clear communicator who can bring order without over-engineering Nice to Have • Audit or pre-audit preparation experience • Experience working alongside development/fundraising teams • Prior work in small to mid-sized nonprofits navigating growth or transition Engagement Details • Fractional, advisory engagement • Part-time, project-based (with potential to extend) • Remote • Timeline: Near-term start preferred • Budget: Open / commensurate with experience (please include hourly rate) To Apply Please include: • A brief overview of your nonprofit finance background • Your experience with Financial Edge Web • Examples of finance workflow or process improvement work • Your hourly rate and availability Apply tot his job
