Job Summary As a Specialized Health Paraprofessional, you will play a vital role in supporting the physical and educational needs of our students. You will work closely with our teachers, school nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide specialized care and instruction to students with unique requirements. Key Responsibilities Perform specialized physical health care services for students, including suctioning, blood sugar testing, medication administration, drip and tube feeding administration, changing diapers, and other specialized services Operate specialized medical equipment and instruments in the assessment and treatment of individuals Respond to emergencies, evaluate the condition of students, and provide health instruction and care as needed Provide basic instructional assistance to students in the classroom or on field trips, including tutoring and reinforcing lesson plans Assist teachers in maintaining an attractive and stimulating classroom environment and responding to the personal needs of students Assist teachers with duties related to special education, including communicating with parents, obtaining information from confidential files, and managing attendance records Instill personal hygiene, good grooming, and manners in students Assist teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on individual students' needs, interests, and abilities Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers Essential Qualifications To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications: An Associate's Degree or higher, or a Workkey's Proficiency Certificate for Teacher's Assistants Knowledge of the special education program and ability to take direction from the School Nurse regarding health care procedures Ability to operate modern office equipment, personal computers, and related software Ability to work effectively with students and work cooperatively with teachers Ability to perform simple clerical work and understand and follow oral and written instructions Preferred Qualifications While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable: Previous experience working in a special education setting or with students with diverse needs Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and healthcare professionals Strong organizational and time management skills Skills and Competencies To excel in this role, you will need to possess the following skills and competencies: Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks effectively Compassion, empathy, and patience when working with students with diverse needs Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits At The Grosse Pointe Public School System, we are committed to supporting the professional growth and development of our staff.
