Job Overview The Principal Engineer - Data Analytics & Data Science will play a critical role in guiding the technical vision, design, and architecture of our data analysis and reporting landscape. This position will be instrumental in shaping the long-term technical strategy, embracing innovation, and providing hands-on expertise as a technical leader for the team. The successful candidate will lead research on emerging industry trends and provide ongoing guidance to bring those trends to fruition. This role requires a powerful approach, blending direct technical guidance, mentorship, and dynamic collaboration in risk and growth management. Key Responsibilities Leads and mentors a team of engineers, providing technical guidance, sharing best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. Adheres to and drives modern software development practices through design reviews. Manages system design through well-defined interfaces across multiple components, code reviews, using data/telemetry to decide. Develops "best-in-class" engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and components are modular, secure, reliable, diagnosable, easily monitored, and reusable. Improves test coverage for services; integrates and implements integration tests; and resolves trouble spots. Ensures testability, scalability/monitoring, reliability, and effectiveness; and understands when code is fit to be shared and deployed. Focuses on business needs through a data-driven approach. Investigates and enhances automation, reliability, and monitoring for deployed products. Sets the technical vision for data analysis and reporting, aligning with organizational objectives. Provides leadership in guiding the overall direction of data analysis technical initiatives. Designs, develops, and optimizes complex data models and reporting architectures. Drives the design and implementation of scalable and efficient data analysis and reporting architectures. Ensures the integrity, security, and performance of data products and reporting solutions by collaborating with platforms, data architecture, and management teams. Defines and implements the long-term technical strategy for data analysis, incorporating technologies and industry trends. Stays up-to-date with emerging technologies and assesses their relevance to the organization. Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, business analysts, data engineers, platforms architects, and IT professionals, to develop comprehensive data solutions. Fosters a collaborative environment that enables information sharing and skill development. Leads technical leadership discussions, lunch and learn sessions, and community-building activities for the engineering community within the organization. Establishes and enforces data quality standards and best practices. Implements processes for data validation, cleansing, and accuracy. Evaluates and selects suitable data analysis and reporting tools to address business needs. Leads requirement meetings and partners closely with platforms and framework teams during the evaluation and implementation of these tools. Partners with engineering and development teams to create and maintain documentation for data analysis processes, reporting designs, and data models. Monitors the performance of data analysis and reporting systems; and provides technical leadership to drive stability and scalability of data products and reporting solutions. Implements measures to enhance performance and troubleshoot issues. Provides strategic insights and recommendations based on data analysis to support decision-making at the organizational level. Recommends system upgrades to support business growth and evolving technology requirements. Utilizes Azure services, such as Azure SQL DW (Synapse), ADLS, Azure Event Hub, Cosmos, Databricks, Delta-Lake to enhance and accelerate delivery of our data products and services. Implements big data and NoSQL solutions by developing scalable data processing platforms to drive high-value insights to the organization. Essential Qualifications Proven track record with at least 15+ years of hands-on experience in data analysis and reporting roles. 5+ years of experience in leadership or senior roles; demonstrating the ability to effectively guide and lead a team. 5+ years of experience working with Cloud technologies, such as ADLS, Azure Databricks, Spark, Azure Synapse, Cosmos DB, DBT, and other big data technologies. Demonstrated advanced proficiency in data analysis tools, languages, ML, and frameworks (e.g., Conos, PowerBI, SQL, Python, R). Proficiency in data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools to effectively communicate insights. Demonstrated expertise in working with cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, to architect and implement scalable and efficient data analysis solutions. In-depth understanding and practical application of Lakehouse architecture principles, combining the best of data lakes and data warehouses for powerful and flexible data management. Advanced SQL skills. Strong understanding of relational databases and business data ability to write complex SQL queries against multiple data sources. Experience managing high-volume and high-velocity data streams, and designing systems that can handle the demands of real-time or near-real-time analysis. Experience in shaping the technical vision for data analysis and reporting initiatives within an organization. Successful management of data analysis projects, including planning, execution, and delivery. Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, adapt to emerging technologies, and implement industry best practices. Demonstrated ability to take ownership and responsibility of critical issues and close them to resolution. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Data Science, or a related technical discipline. Significant industry certifications are a plus. Experience in retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, supply chain.
