Controller (Multifamily Private Equity) – Remote
Guardsman Capital Partners is currently hiring for a Controller (Multifamily Private Equity) to lead the accounting, reporting and financial operations of a growing multifamily private equity firm operating across multiple U.S. markets. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for fund-level accounting (including investment subsidiaries), oversight of property-level financials prepared by third-party management, and delivery of decision-quality reporting to ownership. The Controller will manage a lean internal team (2-3 professionals), owning various FP&A activities for the firm and serving as a trusted financial partner to principals across acquisitions, asset management and dispositions. This individual will report directly to senior company leadership, providing a direct line of information so that they may make important decisions about future investments, distributions, cash flows and budgets. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Financial Leadership & Strategic Oversight • Own all FP&A activities for the firm and its multifamily portfolio, including performance, risk, and return analysis; forecasting; budgeting; cash flow management; and scenario modeling. • Advise senior leadership on capital structure, liquidity, distributions, and profitability to support informed investment decisions. • Develop strategies to enhance return on investment and long-term value creation across the portfolio. Partnership & Portfolio Accounting • Lead, develop, and mentor a lean internal accounting team (2–3 professionals), including task delegation, performance management and professional development. • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes across assets and corporate entities, collaborating with third-party property accountants as needed; prepare and deliver routine portfolio summary reporting to ownership, as well as variance and ad hoc analyses. • Manage capital calls, distributions, capital accounts, and partner allocations. • Own and review waterfall and promote calculations; interpret and apply operating and partnership agreements. Acquisitions, Dispositions & Capital Activity • Support acquisitions with financial diligence, debt financing analysis, entity formation, purchase accounting, integration and post-close reporting readiness. • Partner on dispositions, refinancings, recapitalizations, and investor reporting / communications. • Advise on private equity fundraising and capital activity, including capital calls. Reporting & Decision Support • Develop dashboards, KPIs and models to support asset management, acquisitions, and dispositions. • Utilize advanced financial models and spreadsheets that translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders with varying levels of financial expertise. • Provide analytical support to asset management, investment and administrative teams, including performance analysis and portfolio-level insights. External Coordination & Compliance • Serve as primary point of contact for auditors, tax advisors, third-party property accountants and financial consultants; facilitate the flow of financial information between necessary internal & external parties. • Oversee regulatory, contractual, lender and other compliance requirements across the portfolio. • Research and respond to investor and banking-related inquiries in partnership with leadership and administrative teams, including the preparation of estimates for capital partners regarding current and future-year earnings projections, estimated tax implications, etc. Operations, Controls & Process Improvement • Own the procure-to-pay cycle, including AP, expense reporting, approvals, coding and documentation. • Oversee payroll for employees and contractors, including bonuses, benefits, and periodic audits of time and attendance. • Implement, maintain, and document internal controls, risk management policies and scalable accounting processes; evaluate and improve accounting systems, tools and workflows to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION • 8+ years of progressive finance & accounting experience, particularly in private equity real estate, multifamily, commercial acquisitions or related asset management • Proven experience as Controller, Director of Finance, or a substantially similar senior-level role • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics or relevant field; CPA strongly preferred • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel skills • Highly proficient in QuickBooks, with experience in entity-level and corporate accounting • In-depth knowledge of partnership accounting, real estate fund structures and waterfalls • Experience managing small teams and coordinating with third-party property managers GENERAL REQUIREMENTS • High level of ownership mindset, with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment • Strong attention to detail, organization, follow-up and bringing closure to time-sensitive projects • Analytical mind with exceptional strategic ability and mathematical skills • Proactive, collaborative approach that supports a positive work environment and strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across various time zones • Ability to treat sensitive and confidential information with appropriate discretion • Limited, periodic travel (5-10%) OUR COMPANY Guardsman Capital Partners is an independent private equity firm headquartered in Park City, UT, focused on multifamily real estate throughout the U.S. We invest in communities by identifying opportunities for market repositioning, renovation and operational value-add, with a long-term mindset toward quality housing and responsible growth.
