Fractional Backend Engineer (Backend-First, Full-Stack Capable) Engagement Type: Ongoing Contract (Fractional) Location: Remote Estimated Commitment: 30–40+ hours per month (higher during onboarding) Compensation: $80–120/hour, depending on experience About the Role We are seeking a senior-level Fractional Backend Engineer to maintain, stabilize, and support a complex production system with multiple services and integrations. This is a backend-first role focused on maintenance, debugging, and reliability. While the primary responsibility is backend work, there may be occasional frontend involvement to support debugging, integration fixes, or small adjustments related to backend changes. This role requires strong ownership, accountability, and clear documentation of work performed. Technical Environment • Backend • Node.js v14 • Express • MySQL 5.7 • Sequelize ORM v5.22 • Frontend (contextual / occasional) • React / Next.js • Multiple repositories and third-party integrations • Git-based workflows Responsibilities • Own backend maintenance across multiple services and repositories • Investigate and resolve production issues • Debug API, database, and integration-related problems • Work with Sequelize and MySQL to address data and performance issues • Make targeted improvements to stability and maintainability • Occasionally assist with frontend-side changes related to backend behavior (debugging, integration fixes, minor updates) • Communicate clearly about root causes, fixes, and risks • Maintain detailed, descriptive time logs for all work performed Accountability & Time Tracking (Required) • Time must be tracked using an approved tool (Upwork tracker, Toggl, Harvest, etc.) • Each time entry must include: • Issue or task worked on • Repository or system affected • Brief description of work performed • Weekly written summaries of work completed are required Time entries without sufficient detail may not be approved.
